5 Effective Strategies For Helping a Hyperactive Child

The strategies given below have proven effective. Although following one step can make a small difference in your child's behavior, following all of them has a cumulative effect which can make a big difference in your child's life (and yours as well).

Feed your child a nutritional diet made up of fresh produce, healthy fats and lean protein. It's a fact that sugar elevates blood sugar which can make kids hyper and greatly exacerbate the symptoms of a hyperactive child, so stay away from sugar and the processed foods that are made from it.

Supplement your child's diet with a natural supplement that is FDA-approved. Many parents are discovering that help for the hyperactive child means giving their children natural remedies that heal the brain so it can begin to unction optimally. Obviously, a hyperactive state is not optimal, but when the brain gets the nutrition it needs (which is can't always get from food), it is able to create a balanced mood and a calm, yet alert state of awareness. This a great help for the hyperactive child because the more your child experiences what it feels like to be calm and relaxed, the more the brain trains itself to produce this state. As neuroscientists are fond of saying, "What fires together, wires together."

Limit your child's exposure to t.v. Television is designed to keep us in a trance with quickly changing images that capture our attention. For kids, obsessive t.v. watching can make real life seem boring in comparison. In this way, kids become addicted to the need for constant stimulation which does not help the hyperactive child. Cut down on t.v. slowly over time and engage your child in other activities.

Limit the amount of time you allow your child to play video games. Most video games are violent and like t.v., overstimulate your child with quickly changing images. Plus they reward your child for virtual acts of violence. This can be dangerous to a developing brain because again, overstimulation reinforces the need for constant stimulation. When you realize that in some countries in the world, teens and young adults are being treated for video game addiction, you realize how serious this can be. Substitute video game play for time spent reading, walking the dog and other relaxed activities to give the brain a sense of balance and relief. Again, you will have to cut down on your child's video game play slowly over time.

Get outside and play. Exposure to the natural world will calm and soothe your child by helping a hyperactive child remember what it feels like to "just be." rather than to be constantly agitated. Physical activity will refresh your child and create a sense of balance and a relaxed state of mind.
