Benefits of Music Education

According to recent studies, learning to sing and play music is proven to develop the area of the brain that handles language. The University of Southern California's Brain and Creativity Institute produced research that shows that musical experiences from an early age can prompt vocabulary acquisition and reading and writing skills. In longer terms, learning an instrument in childhood correlates with better math and test scores. What's more, it can improve memory by associating music with new information. There are great academic benefits to music education.

Music has the potential to physically change the brain's structure in a very beneficial way. Research has shown that a brain's physical development is actually different when it has been exposed to music education than when it has not. Playing music stimulates and requires a greater amount of attention and brain space. This in turn allows for greater concentration and multitasking, among other remarkable benefits. Music also helps children develop better visualization in problem-solving. This can impact the way they handle math and science. Music education stretches young minds in ways beyond practical music abilities.

Participation in music education also has the potential of promoting physical development. Playing an instrument can be a great way to practice fine and gross motor skills as well as coordination. Dancing as a result of music also has physical benefits and is a fun way to release energy. Additionally, it can be a great social outlet for young children.  Whether that's playing as a group or finding peers that play the same instrument, music can be an exceptional commonality when making friends and developing relationships.
