Play and Learning

Play and learning go hand in hand. Children learn much of their life skills such as coping with day-to-day life and primary school pressures, meeting challenges, and making better decisions from participating in outdoor play activities. The purpose of this research is to learn about the significance of integrating outdoor play as support for enhancing creative learning of the children. Play and learning is successful when teachers transfer the skills students learned during their outdoor play activities to the classroom setting and other settings outside the classroom. Synthesized data from related studies will supplement the required content for the discussion. This study seeks to reinforce awareness on the importance of the combination of social and cognitive play categories as part of the outdoor play activities to influence the children's behavior, perception, enthusiasm, and speed of learning. Learning through play is a natural and necessary activity, which teachers can help to maximize.

Play and learning are crucial aspects in children's daily lives because it functions to unfold the knowledge around them. Outdoor play promotes children's healthy physical development and enables children to pick up the necessary skills to meet the challenges of adulthood through their own directed outdoor play. John Dewey supported the concept of theory of experience. The child simultaneously extends command or operation over the object by further exploring its characteristics, weaknesses and strengths. This means that the child is exhibiting and extending personal repertoire of habit, skills, and control of the surrounding - learning - through mere play. Even the simplest toy would mean a lot to a child because he can manipulate a toy and in the process understands the structure involved in learning and handling the toy.

Outdoor play in primary school is linked to children's social and cognitive development, which further strengthens the correlation between play and learning. Through outdoor play and learning learning, children develop self-confidence, independence, and communication skills when socially interacting with others. It is also important in keeping their positive dispositions when they are engage in their learning environment. The constantly changing rules of the games, interactions with different peer groups, and the differing environment of the outdoor play allow children to feel the variations as well as formulate perceptions of their outdoor experience.
